For a swim meet to be competitive, fun and efficient, many volunteers are needed. For each home meet that your child participates in, one person from each swimmer’s family MUST volunteer. Listed below are the areas where your help is needed. Most positions are “no experience required” – you just need a willingness to jump right in! Please give generously of your time – we need YOU to make this team successful!
CLERK OF COURSE: Organizes swimmers before the events. Checks the heat sheet to ensure the right swimmer is in the right event, heat and lane, then takes them to the starting blocks.
TIMERS: Starts a stop watch at the starting flash and stops the watch when the swimmer touches at the finish. A head timer will provide specific instructions at the beginning of the meet. Timers meet approximately fifteen minutes before the meet begins.
RUNNERS: At the finish of a race, the runner picks up the time sheets from the timers and officials and “runs” them over to the computer operator. The runner also posts results when they are available from the computer.
COMPUTER: Receives the swimmers cards with the finish time from the runners for each event and calculates an official time. The times are entered into the computer which generates the event/meet results.
AWARDS: Scorers provide result stickers with the swimmer’s names and times. These stickers are placed on the back of the appropriate ribbon and are distributed to the kids throughout the meet. Any unclaimed ribbons at the end of the meet are given to the coaches.
CONCESSIONS: Volunteers will help sell food at the concession stand throughout the duration of the meet. Further, there are jobs needed for concessions setup before the meet and cleanup afterward.
MEET SETUP AND CLEANUP: Individuals are needed to help setup benches for Clerk of Course, officials’ tables, concessions, and other areas of the meets. All swim team families are expected to help remind swimmers and guests to pick up after themselves and to stay after the meet until the pool deck is cleaned up.
OFFICIALS: To be an official you need to have familiarity with rules governing starts, turns and finishes for each stroke. The starter/referee official starts the events and watches toe strokes and turns. Stroke/turn officials specifically watch the swimmers strokes and turns to ensure the are correct by All-City rules.
You can always take a break from your duties to watch your own child compete!
